  • As chief of medical service and program director of the internal medicine program at the University of California, Los Angeles for many years, Roy Young, MD brings the perspective of an academic environment to his role as physician. He has been recognized by Best Doctors® in America since the inception of the publication. His academic achievements include having created the primary care training program at UCLA, a demonstration project funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Along with a program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in association with Harvard Medical School, this program has served as a national model and was seminal in the creation of many such programs in the United States and internationally.

Dr. Young was recruited to Eisenhower Medical Center specifically as the founding Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. In addition to the development of the residency at UCLA, Dr. Young also established UCLA's interdisciplinary ethics committee. In addition, he chaired the committee responsible for principles that created the longitudinal curriculum called "Doctoring" for medical students, which teaches communication skills and sensitivity to patient needs. Dr. Young has been the Program Director for an advanced fellowship in General Internal Medicine that has trained in excess of 150 physicians over the last 25 years. These physicians hold prominent faculty positions in many academic institutions around the United States and are also in leadership positions in community practices.

A New York City transplant, Dr. Young graduated from the City University of New York and received his medical degree from the State University of New York at Syracuse. His residency spanned both Case Western University in Cleveland and UCLA, interrupted by Air Force military service. He completed a fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at UCLA but has focused his clinical career as an internal medicine physician. Dr. Young has always maintained a very active practice on the faculty at UCLA in both the ambulatory and hospital settings. His roles as teacher and physician have been his primary passions.

Dr. Young comes to Eisenhower Medical Center with the high hopes of establishing an exemplary training program in Internal Medicine. He hopes that many of the graduates will remain local and provide outstanding primary care to the people of the Coachella Valley.

“My professional life as a physician has been a continuous pleasure,” says Dr. Young. The privilege to learn from and help people achieve better health and deal effectively with illness has been my inspiration and life's work. The honor of patients allowing me into their private lives has rewarded me with an understanding of human nature that only can come from many intimate conversations with patients from all walks of life.”
