We are very excited to be starting our new emergency medicine residency program at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California. We are in a very unique situation in regards to the initial class of this program. As a result of the rules regarding ongoing medicare funding of the program we need to start our program during this cycle beginning in July 2017 (our initial plan was 2018). We are in the process of seeking ACGME accreditation, which is expected in April of 2017. Given this aggressive timeline, we will not be participating in the ERAS National Residency Match Program. We do anticipate building a competitive program and will be recruiting outside of the match to fill our initial class.
Eisenhower is a busy and highly rated hospital, with an annual ED census of about 82,000 visits per year. There are two well established residency programs already up and running; Internal Medicine and Family Practice. Services available at our facility include comprehensive stroke center, STEMI center with 24 hour cath-lab availability, 24 hour operating room availability, and call schedule coverage for a broad range of specialty consultants. Future EMC EM residents would spend the majority of their time at Eisenhower, but will also be rotating at UCSD Hillcrest hospital, Rady Children’s Hospital, and El Centro Regional Medical Center for training in trauma, toxicology, specialized ICU, pediatric experiences and obstetrics.
Our diverse, experienced and dedicated EM faculty and our hospital system are very excited about this unique opportunity to start what we feel will be a dynamic and comprehensive residency in emergency medicine here in Southern California. We understand this is a rather unique situation given the start of our program late in the application cycle. We are committed to building a high quality program, and are confident in our ability to provide excellent training in emergency medicine consistent with our ranking as a top 100 hospital nationally.
