Message from the Program Director
Greetings and welcome to the Eisenhower Family Medicine Residency Program.
Thank you for exploring opportunities to train with us. We are delighted to be one of the newest Family Medicine Residency programs in the United States. Eisenhower offers innovative approaches to family medicine training in an extraordinary, supportive environment. Our goal is to provide you with the tools, skills and experiences to be an outstanding family physician and leader.
Throughout its history, Eisenhower Medical Center has remained true to its mission "to serve the changing healthcare needs of our region by providing excellence in patient care with supportive education and research." We started with our first group of residents in 2013 and are very pleased to now have a full program of three full years of training with 12 positions per year. Eisenhower Medical Center is a world class community hospital and has embraced becoming an academic teaching hospital with the goal of addressing the growing shortage of primary care physicians in the Coachella Valley and beyond.
Just as Family Medicine has been a leader in the process of health care change - Eisenhower Medical Center is engaged in the momentous task of envisioning and implementing the new and Advanced Medical Home model. Joseph Scherger, MD, MPH, is a Family Medicine leader and visionary who has spearheaded the growth of primary care at Eisenhower Medical Center. Dr. Scherger is a leader in the advanced medical home movement and is here to realize that vision.
Our state-of-the-art Center for Family Medicine, in the Eisenhower George and Julia Argyros Health Center in La Quinta, serves as the outpatient practice for the family medicine residents and faculty. We are working to transform that practice into an Advanced Medical Home. Whether in the office, the hospital, home or other care settings, we are truly caring for our patients when, where, and how they want it with all the support necessary to make it all high quality and sustainable. We are honored to offer training with our colleagues at the world-renowned Betty Ford Center as well as care of the vulnerable child through the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center, both on the Eisenhower Medical Center campus.
To prepare you for your career as family physician and leader, our curriculum offers a broad array of experiences in the hospital, outpatient offices, community clinics and free clinics, home settings, and the larger community — both local and remote — including opportunities to explore family medicine in international settings.
I am confident that you also will be excited and challenged about what we have to offer at the Eisenhower Family Medicine Residency Program.
