Philip J. Shaver, MD, FACC

Every month, Eisenhower Medical Center employees recognize the extraordinary accomplishments of the Center’s medical staff by awarding a physician the Eisenhower Physician of the Month Award. A number of factors are considered: outstanding patient care, exceptional leadership, dedication to teamwork and mentorship of staff, contributions to the community, and an unwavering commitment to excellence at Eisenhower.

At the end of each year, the hospital staff selects one physician from the monthly award winners as the Eisenhower Medical Center Physician of the Year. For 2008, Eisenhower selected cardiologist Philip J. Shaver, MD, FACC to receive this prestigious honor. The award was announced and presented to Dr. Shaver on March 30, 2009.

Dr. Shaver has been a cardiologist at Eisenhower for more than 30 years. He has served in a wide variety of leadership roles at Eisenhower, including as Chief of Cardiology, Chairman of the Department of Medicine and President of the Medical Staff. Since 2002, Dr. Shaver has served as Eisenhower’s Director of Medical Education, and since 2003, has served as Medical Advisor to Eisenhower’s Healthy Living magazine.

“Dr. Shaver is passionate about education. Throughout his career, he has championed physician education and community education activities,” said Lynn Hart, Administrative Director of Surgical Services at Eisenhower, when presenting the award. “Over the years, he has formally and informally taught many nurses, including myself, the skills of advanced EKG [electrocardiogram] interpretation, physiology of cardiovascular disease, and disease management…. He is still visible educating the community through Healthy Living magazine.”

“...share what you know. You will benefit from it, and so will our patients.”

In addition to his work at Eisenhower, Dr. Shaver served for many years in the United States Navy Reserve, and was staff cardiologist at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego, from 1993 to 2002. A graduate of Purdue University and The Ohio State University, Dr. Shaver is Board Certified in Cardiology and Internal Medicine. When he is not hard at work at Eisenhower, Dr. Shaver can usually be found on the bicycle trail, or at home sampling new wines with family and friends.

“It is our obligation to share with and mentor our colleagues so they may benefit from what we have learned, and from the experience we have obtained. To keep the passion in what we do, keep on learning. We are fortunate to be in a profession that requires lifelong learning,” stated Dr. Shaver, accepting the award. “Then, share what you know. You will benefit from it, and so will our patients.”
