    Honoring Our Generous Philanthropists

On Tuesday, January 14, 2014 142 members of Eisenhower Medical Center’s Founders Society were honored in a ceremony at the Annenberg Center for Health Sciences at Eisenhower. The Founders Society launched the financial backing for Eisenhower’s School of Graduate Medical Education (GME), totaling more than $19 million, and inspiring support from another 4,400 donors for a total of $40 million. As guests raised their glasses in a toast, a spectacular glass donor wall featuring the names of the Founders was unveiled. The festivities followed a lively program held in the Helene Galen Auditorium, where Eisenhower Board President Alvin V. Shoemaker welcomed guests and introduced G. Aubrey Serfling, President and Chief Executive Officer. Serfling introduced three key people whose work and generosity made the Eisenhower School of Graduate Medical Education possible: Jackie Autry, Helene Galen and Marie Pinizzotto, MD.

Guests also heard from GME leaders: Joseph Scherger, MD, MPH, Vice President, Primary Care and the Marie Pinizzotto, MD, Chair of Academic Affairs; Maureen Strohm, MD, Program Director, Family Medicine Residency Program; and John Stansell, MD, Associate Program Director, Internal Medicine Residency Program. Three residents — Matin Hemmat, MD, Kiavash Nemati, MD, and Alex Spinoso, MD — offered their unique insights as part of the School’s inaugural class.

The Eisenhower School of Graduate Medical Education offers residency training in primary care for both family medicine and internal medicine. The first year of residency training accommodates 22 physicians, with a capacity of 55 residents that will be reached in 2016. Primary care doctors play a vital role in ensuring that patient care is coordinated and comprehensive. By establishing this program at Eisenhower, enhanced care is immediately provided to build a strong foundation for the future.
